Their hair grows extremely long, growing from a mane down their spine to their shoulder blades. Unclothed, except for vests, blets, or bandoliers used to carry tools and weapons. Coloration varies from tan to black fur, and swarthy or ruddy skin. Their features are strong, noble, and handsome. Females are intensely alluring to humans, elves, and half-elves, and they are entirely immodest, generally ignorant of their effect upon other beings. They speak common (10%), Elven (30%), or Centaur (80%). Combat Females may sing 3/day to either charm or cause fear. All centyrs may turn and kick twice per round; this tactic is typically used to evade or disengage from melee combat. Males are always armed when encountered outside their lair. They carry spears or short bows and daggers or knives. All Centyrs may gallop for 6+d6 turns/day, equalling the pace of most breeds of horse at double movement rate. Leaders (1 in 20) have 5 HD, and may wear leather armor (50%) or use a permanent magic item (50%). 1 in 20 Centyrs will be a Shaman, with 5 HD, 3 first level spells/day, and can speak with equines at will. Habitat/Society Centyrs live in small "herds" led by a single alpha male (stallion) in possession of a "harem" of mares, and constantly challenged for position by his sons that have reached breeding age. When threatened, the herd forgets all competition and cooperates effectively to repel the attackers. Children are cared for communally, often by the youngest mares. Females will all refer to the stallion as their "mate," but will occasionally seek the attention of a "bachelor" when the stallion is preoccupied with other activity. Centyrs introduced into urban societies can easily adopt a monogamous lifestyle. Ecology Centyrs are nomadic, roaming plains from late spring thru early winter, retreating to the shelter of woodlands to forage during the winter. They occasionally hunt small game (birds and hares), especially during the winter. Centyrs have only a most primitive technology, acquiring all but the simplest items thru trade or conquest (the latter generally of humanoids). Centyr herds, especially those including Shamans, have been encountered leading herds of wild or feral horses for purposes of companionship and security through numbers. In such cases, the alpha male Centyr will evict the leading stallion in order to more easily control the herd of beasts. Some sages consider Centyrs to be a cross-breeding of Centaurs and Satyrs, but druids familiar with Centyrs know that they are a distinct identity of sylvankind.
